計画地は3方が道路に面しており、自ずと周辺環境との関わり方を考えさせられる。そこで、敷地外周部を緑地帯とし、誰もが楽しめる緑地道へと変え、街の魅力を向上させた。建築と一体的に計画することで、建築と街との密接な関係性を作っている。そして、これを可能にしているのが、緑地帯と室内を曖昧に繋ぐ中間領域である。この中間領域は2重の建具により仕切られ、それらを開け閉めすることで自然環境をコントロールし、エアコンのない生活を実現させている。このように季節に応じて室内環境が日々変化する建築はまるで生き物のようであり、「もの」とは対極にある存在となる。「もの」と化した建築に「生命」は感じられず、味わいも出ない。ただ古びるだけである。昔、建築は古美なければならないと教わった。綺麗な建築よりも美しい建築を作る。これは「綺麗なもの」で溢れかえる芦屋の住環境に対するシニカルなメッセージでもある。

The site is located between two rivers with a mountain behind. It is also surrounded by roads on all 3 sides leaving only north to the adjacent site. Moreover, because of this naturally made condition, wind breeze runs through the site from the mountain and rivers. Furthermore, it is this condition that lead the architect to make the house with an opening to all 3 sides along with neutral zone. This neutral zone between windows and louver doors on the edge of the house serves as a light, shadow and wind controller. Outside the louver doors, green surrounds the house while making a scene for the street and also serves as a green screen that covers the house from the surroundings.
